So, I have been absent from posting for the past few weeks. I have no real excuses, just been lazy and swamped at the same time. But the celebration of Halloween, the best holiday (it is a holiday for me!) of the year is the perfect time to come back.

Today's show was a celebration of all things horror, and horror-themed punk, metal, and soundtracks. Genres will be colour-coded, punk/psychobilly selections are in red, metal selections are in green, and soundtracks are in yellow. Psychobilly selections came from the great Zombie Night in Canada compilation, a fine selection of Canadian rockabilly and psychobilly bands.

I'll be upfront first and say that for those who loyally read this blog (are there any?) that playlist posts will come on Thursday. School is going to be quite busy this year, and I have quite the juggling act ahead of me. Sorry for the discrepancies between air date and playlist posting. This week's show was a solid one though, especially if you are into experimental music. Highlight comes from the underappreciated Flying Saucer Attack, whose self-titled album is one of the best space rock/psychedelic influenced rock albums from the 90s. It's very soothing and overly dreamy. Listen to the whole thing if you never heard it, it's a masterpiece!

A great album!

I also highly recommend Virt's 8-bit Nintendo remix of Freddie Freeloader. A great jazz tune gets a stunning re-interpretation. And speaking of great jazz, the legendary Alice Coltrane shows up this week! Plus, Battles vocalist Tyondai Braxton has a solid new solo album out, hopefully the new Battles album will follow suit.

Kind of Blue turns 50 today! Playlist for August 17, 2009

Another birthday celebration, this one is for 50 years of Miles Davis' seminal jazz recording Kind of Blue, an album that helped launch the career of John Coltrane, and was a cornerstone in the development of modal jazz. Davis himself was responsible for the creation of many sub-genres of jazz, and is arguably the most innovative and influential jazz musician of all time, while Kind of Blue is arguably his best album. Whether Kind of Blue is the best Miles Davis album is eternally open for debate, since he has at least five essential recordings in his discography. But today belongs to Kind of Blue (released on August 17, 1959), and I intend on giving the album more dues that it very much deserves.

Other highlights include new music from Wolf Eyes and Bloody Panda, and my guest Tara, who sat in for training, and requested the wonderful The Paint Movement. They are coming to Phog this September, and Id recommend any Windsorites into jazzy-rock to check it out.

I'm really procrastinating here, damn. While today's show has no theme, next weeks is the big 50th anniversary of Miles Davis- Kind of Blue. One of the best albums eva! This week had some good albums, among them is Serge Gainsbourg's controversial Histoire De Melody Nelson, a concept album about a middle-aged man obsessing over a young girl after he hits her with his Rolls Royce. Despite the lurid content, the album has stunning string arrangements by Jean-Claude Vannier.

This week's show started off on a very straightforward note, just as any regular Juxtaposition Jukebox episode. No theme for this week's program as well. Though some songs were played in order to tie-in with current events. Kraftwerk's "Tour De France" was played in conjunction with the Tour De France race held this month, where, for the fourth year in a row, a Spaniard wins (Alberto Contador to be specific, who also won the 2007 Tour De France). Similarly, Depeche Mode's "Clean" was played in conjunction with seeing them live in Toronto on the 24th of July. The show was spectacular, as expected, but driving in and out of Toronto was an ordeal. If I ever were to live there, I'd rely on public transit.

No theme again, but there are things worth talking about, and this week's program had a nice variety of soothing, heavy, and chilling music. Highlights include the Meiko Kaji double-bill, featuring the main themes to two of her most popular films, the notorious woman-in-prison film Female Prisoner 701, and Lady Snowblood, a film that perhaps had the highest level of influence on Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. Meiko Kaji was an accomplished pop singer and was the most popular actress in Japanese revenge/exploitation films during the 1970s. Kaji may have not been the most accomplished actress from a technical standpoint, but like Clint Eastwood, she had a presence, and her stoic eyes could communicate more than words often could.

Below is the playlist, which also features a hilarious new rendition of Spinal Tap's "Sex Farm," with a very funky Sly Stone feel to it that fits perfectly with the lyrical content of the song.

The Return of Coalesce and other goodies

The return of Coalesce wasn't a theme per se, but today's program opened with two songs off of their stunning new album Ox, their first one since 1999s 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening. Coalesce, along with Converge and Botch, are the what I consider to be the three most important hardcore bands to come from the late 1990s/early 2000s and influence countless pale imitators. Another minor theme in today's program was Elliott Smith, for his music was featured in the form of Nadja's cover of "Needle in the Hay," and from Elliott Smith himself with "Ballad of Big Nothing." Overall, I was rather pleased with today's program, and I think it turned out to be among my best. Stream it from cjam.ca if you get the chance.

Like last week's celebration for Unknown Pleasures, this week's program marks the 25th anniversary of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds debut album From Her to Eternity. Rising from the ashes of Nick Cave's previous band, The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds have been one of the most consistently great bands of the last three decades, with Nick Cave ranking among the highest of songwriters.

While Nick Cave is the only remaining member from the From Her to Eternity line-up, core Bad Seeds members Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld (who also fronts legendary German experimental band Einsturzende Neubauten) are present on guitars, while Cave's early muse Anita Lane co-wrote the lyrics to the title track.

Apart from Nick Cave, this week's program featured new music from the long-awaited new Toritoise album, Beacons of Ancestorship, along with classic cuts from Berlin's Einsturzende Neubauten and Atari Teenage Riot. I will also mention Montreal's Pawa Up First, an experimental rock act with influences ranging from Ennio Morricone, Jaga Jazzist, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugazi, and Miles Davis. When I saw all those influences listed on their myspace page, I got really excited, and the song played was stunning. Imagine someone rapping over Tortoise or Don Caballero, and that's what Pawa Up First's "In a Hurry to Nowhere" sounded like.

From 1984 to 1990, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds primarily operated out of West Berlin. As expats in the city, this convieniently allowed them to appear in Wim Wenders wonderful 1987 film Wings of Desire. It's been 30 years since this masterwork was released from one of the most influential bands to come out since the origins of punk. To celebrate, I played 5 of the 9 songs from the album and interspersed them throughout the show. A 30th anniversary celebration for Closer will come next year, because both albums are worth dedicating much attention to, and I believe modern music would not sound like what it is today without Joy Division.

Today I also showcased from songs from the 'Best of Revolution Rock compilation' in the on-air studio. Dave from Revolution Rock filled-in for me a couple weeks ago and did an outstanding job. Today was a unique broadcast for the juxtaposing jukebox, as I broadcast the show from the main floor of the C.A.W. Centre instead of 'the fathomless depths of the C.A.W. basement' where CJAM usually broadcasts. The experience was interesting, and I really enjoyed interacting with other people from various University clubs. Drawbacks from simulcasting were mostly with regards to timing and operating the microphones in a perfectly rhymic fashion.

Here is the playlist, consisting mostly of favourite artists that most of you know and love (or I assume you would, if you listen to the show and whatnot). However, I will mention the new album from Productive Confusion's DJ Me, under his musical alias (wh) y.m.e. (??), which is worth a spin for any fans of electronic music or any type of music to sit back and reflect upon things with. Also, the new Sunn O))) album Monoliths & Dimensions is my current favourite of 2009, and will likely top the list of best releases from this year. It's a stunning album that ranks among the best of this decade.

An extended Jukebox/Mashup with Productive Confusion

This week was a special show, running for three hours in length instead of the usual 90 minutes. This was because I also hosted DJ Me's Productive Confusion following the regular Juxtaposition Jukebox time-slot. I treated my hosting duties as a mash-up of Juxtaposition Jukebox and Productive Confusion, since the show came off as a broadcast of Juxtaposition Jukebox that focused on genres and artists frequently played on Productive Confusion.

A new Isis album is a reason for me to celebrate, and today's program started off with an Isis compare and contrast session, taking songs from their albums Oceanic, Panopticon, and their brillant new album Wavering Radiant (one of my favourites of 2009 so far).

During the Productive Confusion segment, many hip-hop artists were featured. Among them are the group responsible for the above album. That album cover and title makes me chuckle, and almost all the stereotypes of west coast gangsta rap are present in the sound and image, but I just can't help but dig S.C.C. and would choose them over the likes of Soulja Boy, Hot Boyz, and G-Unit anyday. Speaking of G-Unit, I also played music from Mobb Deep's seminal album Hell on Earth, and I think it is a shame that they are now affiliated with G-Unit and the useless music of 50 Cent.

Other highlights include new music from Windsor's Johnny West, who has recorded his 3rd album of the last 6 months, titled If I Had a Quarter for Every Time Someone Stuck a Gun in my Face, I'd at Least Have Enough Change to Buy a few Chocolate Bars. Much like his previous albums, the song titles are very tongue in cheek, and the music is very tuneful and intimate. Plus, if you're a fan of Don Caballero, Tortoise, or Can (I am a fiend for these bands), then check out Cheer-Accident and their new album Fear Draws Misfortune, which utilizes the best qualities from all those influential bands. Lastly, the new album from Elfin Saddle titled Ringing for the Begin Again illustrates how bold and daring Constellation Records is. Very unique japanese influenced folk/experimental music that is a must hear.

The Final Dark Days of Don Caballero and other goodies. Playlist for April 27, 2009

Though I should probably give Don Caballero more than just one song as a means of focusing on the story by Fred Weaver, I am sharing this over concern it might go away sooner than I can. Below is Fred Weaver's account of the first incarnation of Don Caballero's disastrous final tour. It is one of the best pieces of rock journalism, and I suggest everyone reads it, even if you are not a fan of Don Cab, there is something to get from the story. Below are a few of my favourite excerpts:

"He was impressed that my van was new-ish (or at least had a fully functioning passenger seat and didn't leak exhaust into the cabin, unlike the Don Cab van)."

"Once we get in the van, I realize that personality conflict will begin less than half an hour after waking up."

"We- me, Don Cab, my van- have become but one of many objects sliding across an ice covered roadway...The front left 10 inches- 1o inches!- of the van impacted the right rear of a small Buick van."

The playlist today featured many jazz and industrial acts. KMFDM, a band that originally broke up ten years ago (but has since reformed), released their 'final' album, Adios ten years ago, and released Skold Vs KMFDM earlier this year. Skold vs KMFDM is a collaboration between the current KMFDM lineup and former member Tim Skold, who has since went on to work solo (and was in Marilyn Manson's band).

I would also like to congratulate all the winner's of the CJAM jammies, particularly the guys from Scaledown Radio for nabbing 'best new show,' my friend Brandon Webb for snagging Best Electronic Program with New Pulse, all the women from CJAM's Women's Radio Collective for winning best genre-focus program with Milk and Vodka, and everyone in the music variety block. To my surprise, I ended up as the runner-up in the 'best music variety' category, and I am grateful for everyone who voted. I don't know if Juxtaposition Jukebox is really the runner-up, because all the shows in the 'best music variety' category are excellent, and each has their own charm that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Congratulations to Verne Smith for winning 'best music variety' for Sin City Shuffle, and cheers to everyone in the music variety block for producing great shows.

420, The passing of a talented writer, and speaking out against despotism. Playlist for April 20, 2009

Quite a show today, and many of the songs played tied-in to events that occur around April 20th. Of course, it wouldn't be 4/20 without acknowledging the influence marijuana has on this day, so I played a few stoner songs for the occasion. Ranging from Peter Tosh's reggae classic Legalize It to doom/stoner rock band Sleep's hypnotic Holy Mountain, it was a set that, while incomplete, hopefully got people into a relaxed and lazy groove.

Yesterday, influential writer J.G. Ballard succumbed to prostate cancer, dying at the age of 78. His novel, The Atrocity Exhibition provided the namesake to the Joy Division song, and his works have influenced countless musicians from a wide variety of genres.

Since today was a rainy day, gloomy music was played to reflect the conditions outside. Along with Joy Division, woeful acts My Dying Bride and Katatonia
, two bands I turn to when feeling morose, were given spins on today's program.

The classic punk song Nazi Punks Fuck Off was also played in conjunction with Adolf Hiter's birthday. While some people are still unfortunately influenced by Nazi ideology, Jello Biafra will have none of that, and from it came a great song that exposes nazi punks for the misguided fools they are.

It can't be all stoner material, and besides, Minor Threat is one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years, and their mark on the music scene is too large to ignore, even on such an anti-straight-edge day.

Big News Day in Music and a gem found on the internet

I should be studying for my exams, but here I am surfing the net and putting this off instead. Two items of note are featured here. First up, Phil Spector, the storied record producer credited with creating "the wall of sound" style of production has been found guilty of second degree murder.
I'm sure most of you know the details of the crime and trial, but in case you don't, background information is found below:

Secondly, something that is both beautiful and saddening at the same time: the final North American concert Slowdive played. The concert occurred on May 21, 1994, and it is a fascinating performance to say the least.

If you've read my blog or listened to my show, I'm sure you've figured out that Slowdive is one of my favourite bands (if not my absolute favourite) and seeing this performace was emotionally stirring. At this stage in their carrer, Slowdive was a mess. Creation records was losing interest in the band, and funding for the tour from their American label dried up, forcing them to self-finance the final leg (which included this show). The emotional strain from an unsupportive label and a debt-ridden tour is very evident in the body language of the band (particuarly Rachel Goswell). The songs in the performance take on a new tone, as the ethereally uplifting atmosphere of the studio recordings transform into downbeat wails of agony. Live, these songs have an air of sadness that the studio versions downplay or lack altogether.
After the tour, Slowdive in essence broke up, and vocalist/guitarist recorded their final album, the more ambient and subdued Pygmalion by himself (singer Rachel Goswell provides vocals on two songs). Pygmalion was a commercial flop and Slowdive was dropped from Creation Records, an event that can be seen as the death of shoegaze. But Pygmalion was an album way ahead of its time, and its influence on other bands is easy to spot. The opening track Rutti can be seen as the first prototypical post-rock song, while the cello on 'Cello' is very reminiscent of Sigur Ros, as music critic Ian Watson points out.

these days, I don't see a Slowdive reunion happening at all, so I will simply close by saying R.I.P. Slowdive,
and thank you for making some of the most moving and dreamlike music I've ever encountered.

Today's show was alright, but the inability to play one track was a bummer to say the least, since it was intended to be a focal point. The track in question is John Carpenter's 'Porkchop Express' from his 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, with Carpenter's scores from Halloween and Escape from New York also getting airplay. Alas, only 2/3 of the Carpenter block was completed, and I apologize to all the Carpenter fans out there hoping to hear the tune. I would like to give thanks to Nicole from The Washing Machine for pointing this out, cause I dunno if I would have detected it.
Anyways, in this month's Exclaim!*#, the !earshot programming profile is on experimental music shows, with DJ Solespin's Eclectricity from Montreals CJLO 1690AM (Saturdays 6-8pm) being the main feature. Underneath there are "other eclectic Canadians" featured, and among them is Juxtajuke. Mind you, they say it airs on Saturdays from 6-8am, but seeing this show getting a tiny blurb in a national publication still put a smile on my face.

Today's show was enjoyable, albeit sloppy at times. While I announced that the great Benny Dreadful of Boderlands Radio was heading to Mexico, I have since been informed that he will be staying. This is great news, since Boderlands is amazing and one of the many great things about CJAM. I also didnt get the chance to congradulate CJAM on attaining protected status, and securing the 99.1 signal. I want to extend many thanks to all those who voiced their support for CJAM, and enabling great programs like Boderlands, (and subpar ones like Juxtaposition Jukebox :P) to stay on the air. Thanks a million. I also want to thank my friend Brandon Webb for filling in for me last week and doing a splendid job, have a glass of Gin (perhaps courtesy of Cobalt).

The playlist itself was bordered around Mono's stunning new album Hymn to the Immortal Wind, my early front-runner for album of the year. The opening and closing tracks started and ended the program, with great new music from Lotus Plaza and Cobalt, and old gems from Laibach and Nitzer Ebb (and cheese from Modern Talking). I would highly recommend Deer Hunter and shoegaze fans check out Lotus Plaza. It is the side-project of Deerhunter's Lockett Pundt and it sounds a lot like Slowdive- Souvlaki (one of my top 5 favourite albums of all-time). Similarly, Cobalt- Gin is the realy frontrunner for metal album of the year, and I will go as far as saying that Cobalt is the future of heavy music.

Lots of goodies from a wide range of musicians this week. In the heavy set, classic Carcass was played in conjunction with their reunion tour, which hit the Majestic Theater last night (I went, and they were a sight to see live), plus a request for Empty Hands, who will be playing at this years Smash the Glass festival on March 27th at the Chubby Pickle. New music from the great Constellation Records came in the form of Land of Kush's Against the Day, paying homage to the reclusive post-modernist writer Thomas Pynchon, author of the nearly impenetrable and grandiose novel Gravity's Rainbow. Sun Ra speaks for himself, as his album Space is the Place is one of the finest and weirdest jazz records ever recorded. Music from Cat Power, Neko Case (her new album is one of the best of this year), and Boris showcased more great musical contributions from female performers that I couldn't fit in one last week's show, and hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash featuring fellow legendary MC KRS-One spoke hip-hop, as they claim in the song-title.

Congratulations Phog Lounge: Playlist for March 2nd, 2009

I would like to extend my sincerest well wishes to Tom Lucier and Frank Incitti of the Phog Lounge for being awarded CBC Radio 3's Best Live Music Club in Canada. Going up against storied venues like The Commodore Ballroom and Call the Office and coming out on top is an astronomical accomplishment, and a testament to the hard work people at the phog have put in for Windsor's art scene.

As a congratulatory measure, the first half of the playlist was dedicated to artists (highlighted in red) who have played at the phog over the years and the great bands that will come to phog in the future.

I will also highlight Khanate and their posthumous final album Clean Hands Go Foul. Khanate, featuring the likes of James Plotkin, Alan Dubin (Old Lady Drivers) and Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch) was one of the most daring and experimental heavy bands to come out in the 2000s, and they go out fittingly on their final cd.

Italo-Disco and Synthpop were major players today. Ran across some technical difficulties on a couple of occasions, but otherwise the show went well. I originally didn't have any theme in mind for the show today, but early in the show I decided to spin a lot of world music. The World Music selections are in red, though acts like Om and Comets on Fire have large eastern tantric and psychedelic influences in them.

While I'm two weeks late, I would also want to acknowledge Mick Harvey's departure from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds after 25 years. It has been almost impossible to imagine the music of Nick Cave without Mick Harvey as his axeman. I wish Mick Harvey the best in his solo efforts and am anxious to see what Mick and Nick do next, regardless of no longer collaborating.
