Playlist for November 2, 2009

Wow, I am actually posting it a day after the show, fastest post since the summer!

Today's show was one I am very pleased with, has a nice variety, and many great artists with very different sounds are crammed within 90 minutes. My favourite part is the juxtaposition between Gogol Bordello and This Mortal Coil, which really embodies what I aimed to create with this program.

1) Om- Thebes (God is Good)
2) Ensemble Plolaris- Klosterjungfurun (Vikings on Vacation)
3) Satomi Sakei- Matsuri No Taiko (Japanese Koto Music)
4) Nudge- Harmo (As Good As Gone)
5) Gogol Bordello- American Wedding (Live From Axis Mundi)
6) This Mortal Coil- Another Day (It'll End in Tears)
7) Tegan and Sara- The Ocean (Sainthood)

Happy Halloween! Playlist for October 26, 2009

So, I have been absent from posting for the past few weeks. I have no real excuses, just been lazy and swamped at the same time. But the celebration of Halloween, the best holiday (it is a holiday for me!) of the year is the perfect time to come back.

Today's show was a celebration of all things horror, and horror-themed punk, metal, and soundtracks. Genres will be colour-coded, punk/psychobilly selections are in red, metal selections are in green, and soundtracks are in yellow. Psychobilly selections came from the great Zombie Night in Canada compilation, a fine selection of Canadian rockabilly and psychobilly bands.

1) The Howling Hound Dogs- Cat by the Tail (Zombie Night in Canada Volume 2)
2) Krazy 8s- Phantom car (Zombie Night in Canada Volume 2)
3) Zombie Riot- Pet Cemetary (Zombie Night in Canada Volume 2)
4) The Meathookers- Dodging Bullets (Zombie Night in Canada Volume 2)
5) The Devil's Hotrod- Baby, if you Leave Me (Zombie Night in Canada Volume 2)
6) The Weirdies- Knife Fight at the Planetarium (The Weirdies in 3D)
7) Vampires of Dartmoore- Die Folter Kammer des Dr. Sex/The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sex (Dracula's Music Cabinet)
8) Deadguy- Horror Business [Misfits cover] (Misfits Truibute Album)
9) Nekromantix- Panic at the Morgue (Life is a Grave...and I Dig it)
10) Entombed- Evilyn (Clandestine)
11) Lord Gore- The Forgotten Flesh (The Autophagus Orgy)
12) Hooded Menace- The Eyeless Horde (Fulfill the Curse)
13) Electric Wizard- I, the Witchfinder (Dopethrone)
14) Anton Garcia Abril- Tombs of the Blind Dead Theme (Tombs of the Blind Dead)
15) Angelo Badalamenti- Laura Palmer's Theme (Twin Peaks Soundtrack)
16) Goblin- Death Dies (Profondo Rosso Soundtrack)

And what would Halloween be without horror movies. Below are some badass trailers for films that are required horror viewing.

Playlist for September 7, 2009

I'll be upfront first and say that for those who loyally read this blog (are there any?) that playlist posts will come on Thursday. School is going to be quite busy this year, and I have quite the juggling act ahead of me. Sorry for the discrepancies between air date and playlist posting. This week's show was a solid one though, especially if you are into experimental music. Highlight comes from the underappreciated Flying Saucer Attack, whose self-titled album is one of the best space rock/psychedelic influenced rock albums from the 90s. It's very soothing and overly dreamy. Listen to the whole thing if you never heard it, it's a masterpiece!

A great album!

I also highly recommend Virt's 8-bit Nintendo remix of Freddie Freeloader. A great jazz tune gets a stunning re-interpretation. And speaking of great jazz, the legendary Alice Coltrane shows up this week! Plus, Battles vocalist Tyondai Braxton has a solid new solo album out, hopefully the new Battles album will follow suit.

Here is the playlist:
1) Virt- Freddie Freeloader (Kind of Bloop: 8-bit Remixes of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue)
2) Fortunately Everything Dies- I Don't Wear White Jeans (Censored)
3) Skinny Puppy- Hospital Waste (VIVISectVI)
4) Nadja- Absorbed in You (The Bungled and the Botched)
5) Flying Saucer Attack- The Season is Ours (S/T)
6) Tyondai Braxton- Opening Bell (Central Market)
7) Alice Coltrane- Walk With Me (Translinear Light)
8) Andy Milne and Benoit Delbecq- Task Sharing (Where is Pannonica)

Playlist for August 24, 2009

A standard episode of the jukebox, but it has a good variety of genres. Or maybe not, the genres in today's program include country, metal, and indie rock. But look at the playlist, there's bound to be something you'd dig :P.

The highlight from today's show is the beastly 21 minute track from Bloody Panda titled Miserere. It's a gargantuan doom track that really crawls under one's skin.

Kind of Blue turns 50 today! Playlist for August 17, 2009

Another birthday celebration, this one is for 50 years of Miles Davis' seminal jazz recording Kind of Blue, an album that helped launch the career of John Coltrane, and was a cornerstone in the development of modal jazz. Davis himself was responsible for the creation of many sub-genres of jazz, and is arguably the most innovative and influential jazz musician of all time, while Kind of Blue is arguably his best album. Whether Kind of Blue is the best Miles Davis album is eternally open for debate, since he has at least five essential recordings in his discography. But today belongs to Kind of Blue (released on August 17, 1959), and I intend on giving the album more dues that it very much deserves.

Other highlights include new music from Wolf Eyes and Bloody Panda, and my guest Tara, who sat in for training, and requested the wonderful The Paint Movement. They are coming to Phog this September, and Id recommend any Windsorites into jazzy-rock to check it out.

John Coltrane with Miles Davis in the background. Image speaks for itself!

Playlist for August 10, 2009

I'm really procrastinating here, damn. While today's show has no theme, next weeks is the big 50th anniversary of Miles Davis- Kind of Blue. One of the best albums eva! This week had some good albums, among them is Serge Gainsbourg's controversial Histoire De Melody Nelson, a concept album about a middle-aged man obsessing over a young girl after he hits her with his Rolls Royce. Despite the lurid content, the album has stunning string arrangements by Jean-Claude Vannier.

Here is the playlist, was pretty good, and it covered many emotional bases.

1) Katatonia- Leaders (The Great Cold Distance)
2) Opeth- April Ethereal (My Arms, Your Hearse)
3) Agalloch- I am the Wooden Doors (The Mantle)
4) Strapping Young Lad- Underneath the Waves (City)

Silliness and Seriousness: Playlist for August 3, 2009

This week's show started off on a very straightforward note, just as any regular Juxtaposition Jukebox episode. Yet, when my good friends Chris Kerr and Chris Genovesi came in to guest on the show, things got very interesting to say the least, and a giggle fit between all of us occurred after one song (you'll have to listen to the show to find out which song it was). Featured on this week's program were sets of experimental music with CJAM music director Chris White's Fortunately Everything Dies project, essential industrial, classic jazz from two Miles Davis proteges and another innovator, two requests from both Chrises from the golden era of hip-hop (or the golden hip-hop era of our childhoods), and a black metal essential.

Here is the playlist:
1) Fortunately Everything Dies- This is the Dream of Eno and Vangelis (Censored)
2) Fortunately Everything Dies- Girls Heart Noisecore (Censored)
3) Scottie's Cut and Paste Project- I Never Get Enough [The Greedy] (S/T)
4) Loop 2.4.3- Zodiac Dust (Zodiac Dust)
5) Throbbing Gristle- Hot on the Heels of Love (20 Jazz Funk Greats)
6) Pigface- The Good, The Bad, and the Druggly (6)
7) Wire & Light- Fading AM Radio Signal (S/T)
8) Eleazar vs John- When You're Built Like That (Pits in the Sandblaster)
9) Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane- Epistrophy (Live at Carnegie Hall)
10) Herbie Hancock- Watermelon Man (Headhunters)
11) Duke Ellington- Warm Valley (Money Jungle)
12) Lost Boyz- Renee (Legal Drug Money)
13) Dead Prez- Hip-Hop (Lets Get Free)
14) Melanie Fiona- Bang Bang (The Bridge)
15) Bathory- Equimanthorn (Under The Sign...The Sign of the Black Mark)
16) Thor- Vancouver Millionaires (Sign of the V)

Coming in two weeks to the Jukebox is the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis- Kind of Blue. I suggest you folks check it out, because it will be a golden jubille worth listening to.

Playlist for July 27, 2009

No theme for this week's program as well. Though some songs were played in order to tie-in with current events. Kraftwerk's "Tour De France" was played in conjunction with the Tour De France race held this month, where, for the fourth year in a row, a Spaniard wins (Alberto Contador to be specific, who also won the 2007 Tour De France). Similarly, Depeche Mode's "Clean" was played in conjunction with seeing them live in Toronto on the 24th of July. The show was spectacular, as expected, but driving in and out of Toronto was an ordeal. If I ever were to live there, I'd rely on public transit.

The playlist:
1) Viosac- January 1991 (You are Planning to Enjoy the Apocalypse)
2) Stravinsky- Song of the Nightingale (The Nightingale)
3) Amon Tobin- Mee The Reapers (inFAMOUS Soundtrack)
4) Tchaikovsky- Le Prologue: Scene Dansante (Sleeping Beauty)
5) Kraftwerk- Tour De France (Tour De France Soundtracks)
6) Fritz Helder & The Phantoms- All Over the Place (Greatest Hits)
7) Le Bus- Atom Love (Fission, Friction, Frequency)
8) Thavius Black- Absinthe (Urban Subsonic)

11) Slowdive- Slowdive (Blue Day Singles Collection)
12) Tortoise- Minors (Beacons of Ancestorship)
13) Dark Mean- China (Frankencottage)

Playlist for July 20, 2009

Just a regular show today, though a juxtaposition was given to Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Blackstar. Mos Def's new album The Ecstatic was recently released, and it is his best one since Black on Both Sides. Thus, I decided to compare and contrast the music of Mos Def and Talib Kweli solo, with them working together on Blackstar.

The playlist:
1) Acid Mothers Temple- Eleking the Clay (Lord Vishnu of the Underground: Vishnu and the Magic Elixir)
2) Francois Couture- Metro (Tape Speed Ins./Sec.)
3) Dynamo Coleoptera- Megagurushi Uta (S/T)
4) Megilla Funk Conduit- Notorious B.A.G.* (New Set New Sound)
5) Inspectah Deck- The Uncontrolled Substance (The Uncontrolled Substance)
6) Mos Def- Auditorium [feat Slick Rick] (The Ecstatic)
7) Talib Kweli- Around my Way [feat. John Legend] (The Beautiful Struggle)
8) Blackstar- Astronomy (Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Blackstar)
9) Obituary- Fields of Pain (Darkest Day)
10) Fuck the Facts- Secret Asian (Collection of Splits 2002-2004)
11) Iron Maiden- Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Flight 666)

* B.A.G. stands for Big Ass Gorilla, I found that quite amusing.

Hanging with my friend Chris: Playlist for July 13, 2009

Wow, I am really late with this post. And I really have no excuse, I've merely been a slacker. I will try my best to get posting sooner (does anyone even read this blog?)

Playlist for June 29, 2009

No theme again, but there are things worth talking about, and this week's program had a nice variety of soothing, heavy, and chilling music. Highlights include the Meiko Kaji double-bill, featuring the main themes to two of her most popular films, the notorious woman-in-prison film Female Prisoner 701, and Lady Snowblood, a film that perhaps had the highest level of influence on Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. Meiko Kaji was an accomplished pop singer and was the most popular actress in Japanese revenge/exploitation films during the 1970s. Kaji may have not been the most accomplished actress from a technical standpoint, but like Clint Eastwood, she had a presence, and her stoic eyes could communicate more than words often could.

Below is the playlist, which also features a hilarious new rendition of Spinal Tap's "Sex Farm," with a very funky Sly Stone feel to it that fits perfectly with the lyrical content of the song.

1) Al Di Meola- Flight Over Rio (Elegant Gypsy)
2) Mr. Something Something- Only the Maker (Shine Your Face)
3) Bomba- Y Tu Que Te Pensabas (Cuatro Caminos)
4) Toronto Tabala Ensemble- Tongue Twister Two (Second Palla)
5) Meiko Kaji- Urami Bushi (Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion Soundtrack)
6) Meiko Kaji- The Flower of Carnage (Lady Snowblood Soundtrack)
7) Spinal Tap- [Funky] Sex Farm (Back From the Dead)
8) Halford- God, Bringer of Death (Resurrection Remastered)
9) 1349- Maggot Fetus (Revelations of the Black Flame)
10) Nameless Grave- King of all Scum (13 Songs from the Grave)
11) Meshuggah- Concatenation (Chaosphere)
12) Dinosaur Jr.- Ocean in the Way (Farm)
13) Sonic Youth- Posion Arrow (The Eternal)
14) Coeur De Pirate- Berceuse (ST)
15) Pigface- KMFPF (6)
16) Tiga- Mind Dimension (Ciao)

The Return of Coalesce and other goodies

The return of Coalesce wasn't a theme per se, but today's program opened with two songs off of their stunning new album Ox, their first one since 1999s 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening. Coalesce, along with Converge and Botch, are the what I consider to be the three most important hardcore bands to come from the late 1990s/early 2000s and influence countless pale imitators. Another minor theme in today's program was Elliott Smith, for his music was featured in the form of Nadja's cover of "Needle in the Hay," and from Elliott Smith himself with "Ballad of Big Nothing." Overall, I was rather pleased with today's program, and I think it turned out to be among my best. Stream it from cjam.ca if you get the chance.

The playlist:
1) Coalesce- The Plot Against My Love (Ox)
2) Coalesce- In My Wake, For My Own (Ox)
3) Lithica- Retaliation on Heaven (Invokation of Satan Within)
4) Nadja- Needle in the Hay [Elliott Smith Cover] (When I see the Sun Always Shines on TV)
5) Entombed- Living Dead (Clandestine)
6) Field Assembly- Out of the Arms (Broadshades & Ephemera)
7) Nick Drake- River Man (Five Leaves Left)
8) Elliott Smith- Ballad of Big Nothing (Either/Or)

14) Plex- Better Days (Brainstorm)
15) Slakah- Enjoy Ya Self V2
16) A Tribe Called Quest- Butter (The Low-End Theory)

25 years of From Her To Eternity. Playlist for June 15, 2009

Like last week's celebration for Unknown Pleasures, this week's program marks the 25th anniversary of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds debut album From Her to Eternity. Rising from the ashes of Nick Cave's previous band, The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds have been one of the most consistently great bands of the last three decades, with Nick Cave ranking among the highest of songwriters.

While Nick Cave is the only remaining member from the From Her to Eternity line-up, core Bad Seeds members Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld (who also fronts legendary German experimental band Einsturzende Neubauten) are present on guitars, while Cave's early muse Anita Lane co-wrote the lyrics to the title track.

Apart from Nick Cave, this week's program featured new music from the long-awaited new Toritoise album, Beacons of Ancestorship, along with classic cuts from Berlin's Einsturzende Neubauten and Atari Teenage Riot. I will also mention Montreal's Pawa Up First, an experimental rock act with influences ranging from Ennio Morricone, Jaga Jazzist, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugazi, and Miles Davis. When I saw all those influences listed on their myspace page, I got really excited, and the song played was stunning. Imagine someone rapping over Tortoise or Don Caballero, and that's what Pawa Up First's "In a Hurry to Nowhere" sounded like.

This is the url to their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/pawaupfirst. Check it out!

The playlist:
1) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Cabin Fever (From Her to Eternity)
2) Caledonia- We Are America (We Are America)
3) Flowers of Hell- Forest of Noise (Come Hell or High Water)
4) Flogging Molly- Paddy's Lament (Float)
5) Pawa Up First- In a Hurry to Nowhere (The Outcome)
6) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- From Her to Eternity [Wings of Desire version] (From Her to Eternity)
7) Einsturzende Neubauten- Vanadium-I-Ching (Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T.)
8) Bethlehem- Veheiking Du Krone Des Todeskultes (Dictius te Necare)
9) Atari Teenage Riot- Destroy 2000 Years of Culture (The Future of War)
10) Fancy- Chinese Eyes (Get Your Kicks)
11) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- The Moon is in the Gutter (From Her to Eternity)
12) Boo Hoo- Married to the World (Don't Die)
13) Tortoise- The Fall of Seven Diamonds Plus One (Beacons of Ancestorship)
14) Kara Kieth- Monsters (Visions Fugitives)
15) Mike Evin- Good Watermelon (Good Watermelon)

From 1984 to 1990, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds primarily operated out of West Berlin. As expats in the city, this convieniently allowed them to appear in Wim Wenders wonderful 1987 film Wings of Desire. Below is the clip from the aforementioned film, where the band performs 'The Carny' (from their 1986 album Your Funeral, My Trial) and the title track to the album celebrated.

30 Years of Unknown Pleasures: Playlist for June 8, 2009

It's been 30 years since this masterwork was released from one of the most influential bands to come out since the origins of punk. To celebrate, I played 5 of the 9 songs from the album and interspersed them throughout the show. A 30th anniversary celebration for Closer will come next year, because both albums are worth dedicating much attention to, and I believe modern music would not sound like what it is today without Joy Division.

Today I also showcased from songs from the 'Best of Revolution Rock compilation' in the on-air studio. Dave from Revolution Rock filled-in for me a couple weeks ago and did an outstanding job. Revolution Rock airs every Tuesday morning from 10:30-12:00 PM below is his blog, check both the blog and the show out, it's worth your while.

http://revrock.blogspot.com/

Here is the playlist (Joy Division in white, Revolution Rock selections in blue)

Live from the CAW main floor. Playlist for June 01, 2009

Today was a unique broadcast for the juxtaposing jukebox, as I broadcast the show from the main floor of the C.A.W. Centre instead of 'the fathomless depths of the C.A.W. basement' where CJAM usually broadcasts. The experience was interesting, and I really enjoyed interacting with other people from various University clubs. Drawbacks from simulcasting were mostly with regards to timing and operating the microphones in a perfectly rhymic fashion.

Here is the playlist, consisting mostly of favourite artists that most of you know and love (or I assume you would, if you listen to the show and whatnot). However, I will mention the new album from Productive Confusion's DJ Me, under his musical alias (wh) y.m.e. (??), which is worth a spin for any fans of electronic music or any type of music to sit back and reflect upon things with. Also, the new Sunn O))) album Monoliths & Dimensions is my current favourite of 2009, and will likely top the list of best releases from this year. It's a stunning album that ranks among the best of this decade.

1) Hella- Biblical Violence (Hold Your Horse Is)
2) Don Caballero- June is Finally Here (What Burns Never Returns)
3) Land of Kush- Light Over Ranges (Against the Day)
4) Kronos Quartet- Raga Mishra Bharavi (Floodplan)
5) Fly Pan Am- Brûlez suivant, suivante! (N'ectoutez pas)
6) Sunn O)))- Big Church [[megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért] (Monoliths & Dimensions)
7) Torche- Across the Shields (Meanderthal)
8) Golgo Bordello- Let's Get Radical (Multi Kontra vs. Irony)
9) Portishead- All Mine (Portishead)
10) Tim Hecker- Borderlands (An Imaginary Country)
11) (wh)y.m.e. (??)- A Shadows Play (new album)
12) Download- Possession (The Eyes of Stanley Pain)
13) Hocico- Born to be Hated (Wrack and Ruin)

Next Week is one not to miss, I will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the iconic Joy Division- Unkown Pleasures. Many tracks from this seminal album will be played.

New York State of Mind

A few friends of mine are heading to New York in the coming weeks (or are already in the city). So, in conjunction with their trips, the first half of this weeks program was dedicated to artists from New York and the varying sounds that came from the city that never sleeps. While I couldnt touch upon every major NYC artists, staples from the city like The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and Wu-Tang Clan had to be represented, and represented they were.

The playlist (New York artists are in purple, the colours of NYU)
1) The Velvet Underground and Nico- I'm Waiting for the Man (The Velvet Underground and Nico)

An extended Jukebox/Mashup with Productive Confusion

This week was a special show, running for three hours in length instead of the usual 90 minutes. This was because I also hosted DJ Me's Productive Confusion following the regular Juxtaposition Jukebox time-slot. I treated my hosting duties as a mash-up of Juxtaposition Jukebox and Productive Confusion, since the show came off as a broadcast of Juxtaposition Jukebox that focused on genres and artists frequently played on Productive Confusion.

A new Isis album is a reason for me to celebrate, and today's program started off with an Isis compare and contrast session, taking songs from their albums Oceanic, Panopticon, and their brillant new album Wavering Radiant (one of my favourites of 2009 so far).

During the Productive Confusion segment, many hip-hop artists were featured. Among them are the group responsible for the above album. That album cover and title makes me chuckle, and almost all the stereotypes of west coast gangsta rap are present in the sound and image, but I just can't help but dig S.C.C. and would choose them over the likes of Soulja Boy, Hot Boyz, and G-Unit anyday. Speaking of G-Unit, I also played music from Mobb Deep's seminal album Hell on Earth, and I think it is a shame that they are now affiliated with G-Unit and the useless music of 50 Cent.

Other highlights include new music from Windsor's Johnny West, who has recorded his 3rd album of the last 6 months, titled If I Had a Quarter for Every Time Someone Stuck a Gun in my Face, I'd at Least Have Enough Change to Buy a few Chocolate Bars. Much like his previous albums, the song titles are very tongue in cheek, and the music is very tuneful and intimate. Plus, if you're a fan of Don Caballero, Tortoise, or Can (I am a fiend for these bands), then check out Cheer-Accident and their new album Fear Draws Misfortune, which utilizes the best qualities from all those influential bands. Lastly, the new album from Elfin Saddle titled Ringing for the Begin Again illustrates how bold and daring Constellation Records is. Very unique japanese influenced folk/experimental music that is a must hear.

The playlist:
1) Isis- Flase Light (Oceanic)
2) Isis- Backlit (Panopticon)
3) Isis- Threshold of Transformation (Wavering Radiant)
4) Kathy Kennedy & Thanos Chrysakis- Villa Trise (HMMM)
5) Elfin Saddle- Sakura (Ringing for the Begin Again)
6) A Silver Mount Zion- Stumble Then Rise on Some Awkward Morning (He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms)
7) Cheer-Accident- The Carnal Carish City (Fear Draws Misfortune)
8) Philip Glass- Abdulmajid (Heroes Symphony)
9) Sarah Craig- Spring Cleaning (The Threshing Floor)
10) Hotcha- Hey Little Boy (Dust Bowl Roots)
11) Rattlesnake Choir- The Midst of my Gloom (Live Music)
12) Western States- Used to Rain (Bye and Bye)
13) DOOM- Angelz [feat. Ghostface Killah] (Born Like This)
14) Kid Koala- Music for Morning People (Carpel Tunnel Syndrome)
15) South Central Cartel- Servin Em Heat (N Gatz We Truss)
16) Mobb Deep- Give it up Fast [Feat. Nas and Big Noyd] (Hell on Earth)
17) Raekwon- Wu-Gambinos [feat. Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Masta Killa, and RZA] (Only Built 4 Cuban Linx)
18) Soso and DJ Kutdown- Knots and Lumps (S-T)
19) Love Pink Pony- Don't Do It [Part 2- Budapest] (Vida)
20) Kero- Riversidedrive (Shitkatapult)
21) Animal Collective- In the Flowers (Merriweather Post Pavilion)
22) Johnny West- With Friends Like These, Who Needs Antifreeze (If I Had a Quarter for Every Time Someone Stuck a Gun in my Face, I'd at Least Have Enough Change to Buy a few Chocolate Bars)
23) Tara Watts- Camels in Canada (About Love)
24) The Veils- Killed by the Boom (Sun Gangs)
25) Botch- Frequency Ass Bandit (We are the Romans)
26) Converge- Black Cloud (You Fail Me)

Playlist for May 4, 2009

The above image is from one of my favourite movies, and my dvd contains an additional cd of music inspired by this highly influential cyper-punk film. Read up on Tetsuo: The Iron Man on imdb or wikipedia, and if interested, check it out. (Incase you're wondering, my avatar for blogspot comes from the film).

Onto the playlist, which featured many rap songs, because I have been lacking in the hip-hop department for too long. The Two Fingers project featuring Amon Tobin, Doubleclick, and MC Sway is pretty prime, and thanks to Murad from Productive Confusion for pushing me to play it. Songs inspired by Tetsuo are in grey.

1) Herbie Hancock- Maiden Voyage (Maiden Voyage)
2) Curtis Andrews- Vedic Square Dance (The Offering of Curtis Andrews)
3) Gregory Kraj- The Chinatown Bank Heist (Mama Don't Cry)
4) The Foreign- Quicksand (Elemental)
5) Two Fingers- Jewels & Gems (Two Fingers)
6) Lexington and Whatevski- Shotgun a Beer (Preggars Can't Be Choosers)
7) Nas- N.Y. State of Mind (Illmatic)
8) Battles- Race: In (Mirroed)
9) Flying Saucer Attack- The Season is Ours (Flying Saucer Attack)
10) This Mortal Coil- Song of the Siren (It'll End in Tears)
11) Frontline Assembly- Black Fluid (Music Inspired By Tetsuo the Ironman)
12) Razed in Black- Oh My Goth (Music Inspired By Tetsuo the Ironman)
13) Synaesthesia- Dark Core (Music Inspired By Tetsuo the Ironman)

The Final Dark Days of Don Caballero and other goodies. Playlist for April 27, 2009

Though I should probably give Don Caballero more than just one song as a means of focusing on the story by Fred Weaver, I am sharing this over concern it might go away sooner than I can. Below is Fred Weaver's account of the first incarnation of Don Caballero's disastrous final tour. It is one of the best pieces of rock journalism, and I suggest everyone reads it, even if you are not a fan of Don Cab, there is something to get from the story. Below are a few of my favourite excerpts:

"He was impressed that my van was new-ish (or at least had a fully functioning passenger seat and didn't leak exhaust into the cabin, unlike the Don Cab van)."

"Once we get in the van, I realize that personality conflict will begin less than half an hour after waking up."

"We- me, Don Cab, my van- have become but one of many objects sliding across an ice covered roadway...The front left 10 inches- 1o inches!- of the van impacted the right rear of a small Buick van."

Here is a link to the entire tour diary: http://www.swanfungus.com/2007/04/don-caballero-final-tour-diary.html

The playlist today featured many jazz and industrial acts. KMFDM, a band that originally broke up ten years ago (but has since reformed), released their 'final' album, Adios ten years ago, and released Skold Vs KMFDM earlier this year. Skold vs KMFDM is a collaboration between the current KMFDM lineup and former member Tim Skold, who has since went on to work solo (and was in Marilyn Manson's band).

I would also like to congratulate all the winner's of the CJAM jammies, particularly the guys from Scaledown Radio for nabbing 'best new show,' my friend Brandon Webb for snagging Best Electronic Program with New Pulse, all the women from CJAM's Women's Radio Collective for winning best genre-focus program with Milk and Vodka, and everyone in the music variety block. To my surprise, I ended up as the runner-up in the 'best music variety' category, and I am grateful for everyone who voted. I don't know if Juxtaposition Jukebox is really the runner-up, because all the shows in the 'best music variety' category are excellent, and each has their own charm that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Congratulations to Verne Smith for winning 'best music variety' for Sin City Shuffle, and cheers to everyone in the music variety block for producing great shows.

Onto the playlist, (one song is dedicated to friends of mine, guess which one it is and you win... a smile from Kyle).

Setlist:
1) Angelo Badalamenti- Blue Velvet Main Titles (Blue Velvet Soundtrack)
2) Skold vs. KMFDM- Bloodsport (Skold vs. KMFDM)

420, The passing of a talented writer, and speaking out against despotism. Playlist for April 20, 2009

Quite a show today, and many of the songs played tied-in to events that occur around April 20th. Of course, it wouldn't be 4/20 without acknowledging the influence marijuana has on this day, so I played a few stoner songs for the occasion. Ranging from Peter Tosh's reggae classic Legalize It to doom/stoner rock band Sleep's hypnotic Holy Mountain, it was a set that, while incomplete, hopefully got people into a relaxed and lazy groove.

Yesterday, influential writer J.G. Ballard succumbed to prostate cancer, dying at the age of 78. His novel, The Atrocity Exhibition provided the namesake to the Joy Division song, and his works have influenced countless musicians from a wide variety of genres.

Since today was a rainy day, gloomy music was played to reflect the conditions outside. Along with Joy Division, woeful acts My Dying Bride and Katatonia
, two bands I turn to when feeling morose, were given spins on today's program.

The classic punk song Nazi Punks Fuck Off was also played in conjunction with Adolf Hiter's birthday. While some people are still unfortunately influenced by Nazi ideology, Jello Biafra will have none of that, and from it came a great song that exposes nazi punks for the misguided fools they are.

Below is the playlist. Weed songs are in green, sad songs are in white, while Minor Threat songs are in red. It can't be all stoner material, and besides, Minor Threat is one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years, and their mark on the music scene is too large to ignore, even on such an anti-straight-edge day.

The playlist:
1) Jaga Jazzist- Another Day (The Stix)
2) Bat For Lashes- Sleep Alone (Two Suns)
3) False Face- Year of the Benefit of the Doubt (Apple Crisp Compilation)
4) My Dying Bride- The Lies I Sire (For Lies I Sire)
5) Joy Division- Atrocity Exhibition (Closer)
6) Katatonia- We Must Bury You (Last Fair Deal Gone Down)
7) Dharmakasa- Kojo No Tsuki (Between Worlds)
8) Myles Bigelow- Can I Get a Whoa! (Good Life)
9) Peter Tosh- Legalize It (Legalize It)
10) Sublime- Smoke Two Joints (40 oz. to Freedom)
11) Kyuss- Thumb (Blues for the Red Sun)
12) Sleep- Holy Mountain (Sleep's Holy Mountain)
13) Minor Threat- Straight Edge (Minor Threat)
14) Minor Threat- Screaming at a Wall (Minor Threat)
15) Dead Kennedys- Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Plastic Surgery Disasters)
16) Hot Panda- Whale Headed Girl (Volcano...Bloody Volcano)
17) The Lodge- World in Me (That That Devil)

Big News Day in Music and a gem found on the internet

I should be studying for my exams, but here I am surfing the net and putting this off instead. Two items of note are featured here. First up, Phil Spector, the storied record producer credited with creating "the wall of sound" style of production has been found guilty of second degree murder.
I'm sure most of you know the details of the crime and trial, but in case you don't, background information is found below:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6984082.stm

Secondly, something that is both beautiful and saddening at the same time: the final North American concert Slowdive played. The concert occurred on May 21, 1994, and it is a fascinating performance to say the least.

If you've read my blog or listened to my show, I'm sure you've figured out that Slowdive is one of my favourite bands (if not my absolute favourite) and seeing this performace was emotionally stirring. At this stage in their carrer, Slowdive was a mess. Creation records was losing interest in the band, and funding for the tour from their American label dried up, forcing them to self-finance the final leg (which included this show). The emotional strain from an unsupportive label and a debt-ridden tour is very evident in the body language of the band (particuarly Rachel Goswell). The songs in the performance take on a new tone, as the ethereally uplifting atmosphere of the studio recordings transform into downbeat wails of agony. Live, these songs have an air of sadness that the studio versions downplay or lack altogether.
After the tour, Slowdive in essence broke up, and vocalist/guitarist recorded their final album, the more ambient and subdued Pygmalion by himself (singer Rachel Goswell provides vocals on two songs). Pygmalion was a commercial flop and Slowdive was dropped from Creation Records, an event that can be seen as the death of shoegaze. But Pygmalion was an album way ahead of its time, and its influence on other bands is easy to spot. The opening track Rutti can be seen as the first prototypical post-rock song, while the cello on 'Cello' is very reminiscent of Sigur Ros, as music critic Ian Watson points out.

Here's the setlist to their performance. Has a good mix of singles, and songs off of their first two albums Just For a Day and Souvlaki:

Machine Gun, Souvlaki Space Station, Slowdive, Catch the Breeze, 40 Days, Avalyn, Mellon Yellow, When The Sun Hits, Alison, Losing Today, Morningrise

Both albums, especially the latter, are shoegaze essentials. Neal Halstead, Rachel Goswell and drummer Ian McCutcheon later formed Mojave 3, which continues to record albums to this day. Though reunions are quite popular
these days, I don't see a Slowdive reunion happening at all, so I will simply close by saying R.I.P. Slowdive,
and thank you for making some of the most moving and dreamlike music I've ever encountered.

Playlist for April 13, 2009

Today's show was pre-recorded, because I had an exam to write (sorry to anyone who called and requested a song, if there was a call). But this list still covers some great artists, including Electroluminescent, who were fantastic at Phog this past Saturday night. I'll also comment on the reunion album from legendary Dutch death metal band Pestilence titled Resurrection Macabre, which is alright, though I suggest checking out their 1989 album Consuming Impulse instead, which is a death metal classic.

Playlist:
1) Cobalt- Dry Body (Gin)
2) Pestilence- Devouring Frenzy (Resurrection Macabre)
3) Electroluminescent- Ampere (Measures)
4) Shalabi Effect- Mokoondi (S/T)
5) Somos Collective- Tu Sabes De Done Yo Vengo (Todo Fluye Asi)
6) Kiran Ahluwalia- Yakeenan (Wanderlust)
7) Tortoise- Ry Cooder (S/T)
8) Godspeed You! Black Emperor- Motherfucker=Redeemer [Part 2] (Yanqui U.X.O.)
9) Grinderman- Grinderman (S/T)
10) Bohren & Der Club of Gore- Gore Motel (Gore Motel)
11) Mr. Bungle- Chemical Marriage (Disco Volante)

Playlist for Arpil 6, 2009

Today's show was alright, but the inability to play one track was a bummer to say the least, since it was intended to be a focal point. The track in question is John Carpenter's 'Porkchop Express' from his 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, with Carpenter's scores from Halloween and Escape from New York also getting airplay. Alas, only 2/3 of the Carpenter block was completed, and I apologize to all the Carpenter fans out there hoping to hear the tune. Other soundtracks included are listed below, from noted films to films with a marginal cult following.
Films played a key theme to today's program outside of the soundtracks. Agalloch's- 'The Hawthorne Passage' freatures samples from Alejandro Jodorowsky's Fando Y Lis, while Der Eisenrost mainman Chu Ishikawa served as composer to many of Shinya Tsukamoto's films (such as Tetsuo: The Ironman, Tokyo Fist, and A Snake of June). All of these movies are works of art, and I'd recommend people seeking them out.

1) Agalloch- The Hawthorne Passage (The Mantle)
2) Voici- Rossignolet (Bette & Wallet)
3) United Steelworkers of Montreal- Making Babies (Three on the Tree)
4) Provincial Archive- Night Sounds (Nameless Places)
5) John Coltrane- Resolution (A Love Supreme)
6) Clifton Anderson- We'll Be Together Again (Decade)
7) Ann Southam- Noisy River (Pond Life)
8) Aphex Twin- Fingerbib (Richard D. James Album)
9) Der Eisenrost- White Way (Armored Weapon)
10) Venetian Snares- Calvin Kleining (Filth)
11) Hermann Kopp, Dakarti Lorenz & John Boy Walton- Menage-a-trois (Nekromantik Soundtrack)
12) John Carpenter- Halloween Theme (Halloween Soundtrack)
13) John Carpenter- Escape From New York Theme (Escape From New York Soundtrack)
14) Vangelis- Blade Runner [end credits] (Blade Runner Soundtrack)
15) Johnny Greenwood- Prospector's Quartet (There Will Be Blood Soundtrack)
16) Lhasa- Anyone and Everyone (S/T)

So apparently Juxtaposition Jukebox is in the April 2009 issue of Exclaim

I would like to give thanks to Nicole from The Washing Machine for pointing this out, cause I dunno if I would have detected it.
Anyways, in this month's Exclaim!*#, the !earshot programming profile is on experimental music shows, with DJ Solespin's Eclectricity from Montreals CJLO 1690AM (Saturdays 6-8pm) being the main feature. Underneath there are "other eclectic Canadians" featured, and among them is Juxtajuke. Mind you, they say it airs on Saturdays from 6-8am, but seeing this show getting a tiny blurb in a national publication still put a smile on my face.

Hymn to the Immortal Wind, Playlist for March 30, 2009

Today's show was enjoyable, albeit sloppy at times. While I announced that the great Benny Dreadful of Boderlands Radio was heading to Mexico, I have since been informed that he will be staying. This is great news, since Boderlands is amazing and one of the many great things about CJAM. I also didnt get the chance to congradulate CJAM on attaining protected status, and securing the 99.1 signal. I want to extend many thanks to all those who voiced their support for CJAM, and enabling great programs like Boderlands, (and subpar ones like Juxtaposition Jukebox :P) to stay on the air. Thanks a million. I also want to thank my friend Brandon Webb for filling in for me last week and doing a splendid job, have a glass of Gin (perhaps courtesy of Cobalt).

The playlist itself was bordered around Mono's stunning new album Hymn to the Immortal Wind, my early front-runner for album of the year. The opening and closing tracks started and ended the program, with great new music from Lotus Plaza and Cobalt, and old gems from Laibach and Nitzer Ebb (and cheese from Modern Talking). I would highly recommend Deer Hunter and shoegaze fans check out Lotus Plaza. It is the side-project of Deerhunter's Lockett Pundt and it sounds a lot like Slowdive- Souvlaki (one of my top 5 favourite albums of all-time). Similarly, Cobalt- Gin is the realy frontrunner for metal album of the year, and I will go as far as saying that Cobalt is the future of heavy music.

The playlist:
1) Mono- Ashes in the Snow (Hymn to the Immortal Wind)
2) Lotus Plaza- Quicksand (The Floodlight Channels)
3) Great Lake Swimmers- Concrete Heart (Lost Channels)
4) Andrew Vincent- Rotten Pear (Rotten Pear)
5) Modern talking- Brother Louie (Ready for Romance)
6) Trans-X- 3D Dance (Living on Video)
7) Fuck Buttons- Bright Tomorrow (Street Horrrsing)
8) Laibach- Drzava (Laibach)
9) Nitzer Ebb- Murderous (That Total Age)
10) Cobalt- Gin (Gin)
11) Ben Somer- Lies in July (The Last One)
12) Rufus Wainwright- Everybody Knows [Leonard Cohen cover] (I'm Your Man)
13) Mono- Everlasting Light (Hymn to the Immortal Wind)

Here's the video for Modern Talking's Brother Louie. So hilariously cheesy in so many ways. For example, why is he playing a guitar (an unplugged one) when there is no guitar in the song.

Playlist for March 16, 2009

Lots of goodies from a wide range of musicians this week. In the heavy set, classic Carcass was played in conjunction with their reunion tour, which hit the Majestic Theater last night (I went, and they were a sight to see live), plus a request for Empty Hands, who will be playing at this years Smash the Glass festival on March 27th at the Chubby Pickle. New music from the great Constellation Records came in the form of Land of Kush's Against the Day, paying homage to the reclusive post-modernist writer Thomas Pynchon, author of the nearly impenetrable and grandiose novel Gravity's Rainbow. Sun Ra speaks for himself, as his album Space is the Place is one of the finest and weirdest jazz records ever recorded. Music from Cat Power, Neko Case (her new album is one of the best of this year), and Boris showcased more great musical contributions from female performers that I couldn't fit in one last week's show, and hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash featuring fellow legendary MC KRS-One spoke hip-hop, as they claim in the song-title.

The Playlist:
1) Carcass- Inpropogation (Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious)
2) Amorphis- Better Unborn (Elegy)
3) Wolves in the Throne Room- Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (Black Cascade)

5) Land of Kush- Against the Day (Against the Day)
6) Sun Ra- Rocket Number Nine (Space is the Place)
7) Faust- Apokalypse (Ravvivando)
8) Blah Blah 666- Home Sexuality (It's Only Live)
9) Jeff Presslaff Trio- Having Met Ms. Jones (Red Goddess)

11) Neko Case- Vengeance is Sleeping (Middle Cyclone)
12) Boris with Muchio Kurihara- Rainbow (Rainbow)
13) Cale Simpson- The Human Genome Project (S/T)
14) Grandmaster Flash feat KRS-One- We Speak Hip-Hop (The Bridge)

Congratulations Phog Lounge: Playlist for March 2nd, 2009

I would like to extend my sincerest well wishes to Tom Lucier and Frank Incitti of the Phog Lounge for being awarded CBC Radio 3's Best Live Music Club in Canada. Going up against storied venues like The Commodore Ballroom and Call the Office and coming out on top is an astronomical accomplishment, and a testament to the hard work people at the phog have put in for Windsor's art scene.

As a congratulatory measure, the first half of the playlist was dedicated to artists (highlighted in red) who have played at the phog over the years and the great bands that will come to phog in the future.

I will also highlight Khanate and their posthumous final album Clean Hands Go Foul. Khanate, featuring the likes of James Plotkin, Alan Dubin (Old Lady Drivers) and Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch) was one of the most daring and experimental heavy bands to come out in the 2000s, and they go out fittingly on their final cd.

1) What Seas What Shores- Old Reliable (Threnodies)
2) Theory of Everything- Infinite Improbability (S/T)
3) Ron Leary- All You Do (Lapse)
4) You Say Party We Say Die- Teenage Hit Wonder (Remik's Cube)
5) Tokyo Police Club- Your English is Good (Elephant Shell)
6) Final Fantasy- The Chronicles of Sarnia (Has a Good Home)
7) Citywide Vaccum- Sweet Kraut (Pact)
8) Can- Future Days (Future Days)
9) Camera Obscura- Let's Go Bowling (Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi)
10) Zombi- Spirit Warrior (Spirit Animal)
11) Leonard Cohen- Avalance (Songs of Love and Hate)
12) Khanate- Wings From Spine (Clean Hands Go Foul)
13) Absu- Night Fire Cannonization (S/T)

Bring the Cheese! Playlist for February 23, 2009

Italo-Disco and Synthpop were major players today. Ran across some technical difficulties on a couple of occasions, but otherwise the show went well. Nola sludge metal also got focus, because tomorrow is Mardi Gras. I'd highly recommend Acid Bath's When The Kite String Pops to anyone. It is one of the most poetically violent and haunting albums I ever heard. If you liked Deadboy and the Elephant Man, you owe it to yourself to see where Dax Riggs started. On with the playlist.

1) Acid Bath- Blue (When the Kite String Pops)
2) Crowbar- The Lasting Dose (Sonic Excess in its Purest Form)
3) Eyehategod- Methamphetamine (Dopesick)
4) Olivier Messiaen- Premieres Fusees
5) Johan Soderqvist- Then We Are Together (Let the Right One In Soundtrack)
6) Gonzales- Gogol (Solo Piano)
7) Gary Numan- Films (The Pleasure Principle)
8) Seed Organization Meets Richie Phoe- Zebra (Northern Faction 4)
9) Dubmatix- Black Madonna Dub (Northern Faction 4)
10) Boytronic- You (The Working Model)
11) Space- Magic Fly (Magic Fly)
12) Radiorama- Aliens (Best of Radiorama)
13) Fancy- Bolero (Greatest Hits)
14) Mathematik- If It Isn't (No Division)
15) DL Incognito- Claim to Fame (A Captured Moment in Time)

80s synthpop would not be complete without imagery, so below are some of the best music videos ever :P

And on the subject of 80s cheese, here is the trailer for one of the best movies ever made. Seriously, it's better than 8/10 best pictures to come out in the last ten years.

R u tuff: Playlist for February 16, 2009

For part of the setlist I channeled my inner tough-jock and pumped up the volume with the br00tal beatz. Below is the setlist. Highlights include The Rhythm Method's humourous ode to the foibles of an unplanned pregnancy, Saul Williams' great allusions to Bowie, The Flaming Lips' majestic march from their mind-bending film, good fun from Go! Borderlands Radio: A Shoutout to Ben

I'm a couple days late with this one (been waist deep in midterms), but I would like to extend a huge thanks for Benny "Dreadful" Denes for allowing me to sit in as a guest on the fantastic Boderlands Radio. I had a blast and look forward to sharing the microphone with Ben in the future.

Tune-in to Borderlands Radio every Wednesday from 8-8:30 PM on CJAM 91.5 FM, or stream at cjam.ca. It's news from the other side like no other!

Playlist for February 9, 2008

I originally didn't have any theme in mind for the show today, but early in the show I decided to spin a lot of world music. The World Music selections are in red, though acts like Om and Comets on Fire have large eastern tantric and psychedelic influences in them.

While I'm two weeks late, I would also want to acknowledge Mick Harvey's departure from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds after 25 years. It has been almost impossible to imagine the music of Nick Cave without Mick Harvey as his axeman. I wish Mick Harvey the best in his solo efforts and am anxious to see what Mick and Nick do next, regardless of no longer collaborating.

Setlist:
Comets on Fire- Dogwood Rust (Avatar)
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- Cabin Fever (From Her to Eternity)
Om- Bhima's Theme (Pilgrimmage)
Parmela Attaruwala- Whispers of the Water (Sapphire Skies)
Shashi-Lata Virk- Labe Lalli Sharah Kee Batein (Dreams)
Bombay Dub Orchestra- Map of Dusk (3 Cities)
Abraham Eetak- Willow's Song (Willow's Song)
Himiko- Nanika Ga Hajimaru (Shippo o Tsukame)
Bad Brains- Fearless Vampire Killers (S/T)
Duke Ellington- Fleurette Africaine (Money Junkies)
Masia One- Head in the Clouds (Pulau)
Toy Killers- Bleed for the Mind (The Unlistenable Years)
Horde of Two- Conversations in a Berlin Train Station (Guitar and Bass Actions)
Michael Matthews- On the Outer Edge (Cult Figures- Electroacoustic Music from Canada)

First Post, Jumping on the blogwagon

On a whim I decided to create a blog for Juxtaposition Jukebox. This blog will serve as a means of posting playlists, and linking up with all the other quality blogs affiliated with Cjam, Uwindsor, and whatnot.

Without further ado, here is the playlist for Monday February 2, 2009. The format is artist-song title (album title).

1) Combichrist- All Pain is Gone (Today We Are All Demons)
2) Christer- How do you like it: Cadaver (Techna)
3) :Wumpscut:- Down Where We Belong (Embryodead)
4) The Tree Streets- White Girl (Right to Stand)
5) Satyricon- Black Crow on A Tombstone (The Age of Nero)
6) Einsturzende Neubauten- Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T. (Zeichnungen Des Patienten O.T.)
7) Godflesh- Mothra (Pure)
8) Furs- Funky Candidate (Streets of Rage)
9) Coil- Ostia [The Death of Pasolini] (Horse Rotorvator)
10) Six Organs of Admittance- Bless Your Blood (The Sun Awakens)
11) The Bicycles- Can I Keep Calling You Baby? (Oh No, It's Love)
12) Rah Rah- I've Got Faith (Going Steady)
13) Electroluminescent- Rattle Around the Corner (S/T)
14) My Dear Disco- Amsterdam (Dancethink)

No theme or focus for this week's show, though it features many electronic music acts, particularly industrial and ebm. Electroluminescent I'd highly recommend for any krautrock fan, it's good stuff!
